SUMMARY

The successful candidate will follow specifications and design documentation to design and implement firmware for high-energy battery management electronics systems, define and create software for test and external control systems, and create PC-based applications for testing and validation. The successful candidate will also document all work and interact with engineering and production departments for product development, testing and validation based on customer specifications and regulatory requirements.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Using internal requirements and industry standards, implement firmware for embedded microcontrollers, specifically ST Micro STM32 family and various ARM Cortex M3 and M4 devices using the C programming language.
  • Design, implement, test, and debug system support software using C++ and Python programming languages, including but not limited to data logging applications, remote control terminal software for battery systems, and data analysis tools.
  • Assist with the creation and review of product specifications and design documentation for battery systems.
  • Assist with DFMEA analysis and worst-case fault analysis documentation.
  • In conjunction with hardware engineers, implement test firmware for breadboard circuits and prototype circuit boards when required.
  • Effectively use electronic lab equipment as required to capture test data, analyze issues and verify design criteria (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, meters, etc.).
  • Assist with troubleshooting circuit boards and work with hardware engineers to correct functional deviations.
  • Interact with engineering and production departments for product development, testing and validation.
  • Give presentations to customers and co-workers as required; mentor junior staff when appropriate. Must be able to track and report activity progress and exhibit flexibility in meeting project deadlines.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, or Electrical Engineering required, Master of Science or above preferred.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in embedded systems design and development also required. 
  • Battery management systems or power control systems (UPS, programmable power supplies, vehicle power management) experience desired.
  • Competence in embedded C for microcontrollers is essential. 
  • Experience with assembly language programming is considered desirable.
  • Experience implementing the Controller Area Network (CAN Bus) communication protocol is highly desirable, experience with other communications protocols (SPI, I2C, RS-485, Ethernet, or Modbus) is also desirable.
  • Experience developing PC applications using C++ and Python for desktop applications for test and development a plus. 
  • Familiarity with applicable military, commercial, industrial, and automotive manufacturing standards as well as industry standards including AS9100, ISO 9001, ISO 26262, ISO 12207, and DO-178 is highly desirable.
  • Proven experience in embedded systems design in various forms (foreground-background, cyclic executive, and/or preemptive, multitasking real-time OS-based).
  • Familiarity with software configuration management tools, defect tracking tools, and the peer review process. 
  • The ability to read schematics and utilize data sheets for components is essential.
